Start off with a clean, wet, warm beard area: clean because if you have any nicks, no harmful bacteria will cause irritation; wet and warm because the humid moisture will swell the hair up, softening it and raising it from the pore. Higher, larger and more supple bristles will always give a closer shave.

Massage in a thick, ultra moisturising shave cream such as Molton Brown Supershave Olibanum, which is rich in skin nourishing vitamin E, wait a minimum of 30 seconds for it to soften the beard up (use the time to brush your teeth) and shave in the direction of your hair growth. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. Apply a specialised alcohol-free post-shave balm such as Molton Brown Male Ultra-Light Bai Ji Hydrator to rebalance the skin.
