Plain and simple, get ready for a great shave from the Schick Hydro 5 razor! The newly minted razor, which launches today April 6, represents a MAJOR upgrade to Schick’s entire line of shaving and skin care products.
Editor’s Note: If you haven’t tried a Schick razor since the big bulky Quattro topped the Mach 3 with 4 blades back in September 2003, get out of bed, throw on some sweats and buy this razor. You’re in for a big surprise!
Shave, Test, and More Shave
For the past two weeks we’ve put the Hydro 5 razor to task across all major razor characteristics including; design, function, comfort, feedback and performance.
Editor’s Note: We’re not scientists, we don’t own electron microscopes, but we've shaved day after day with countless razors over the past 30 years. When it comes to shaving we know what works, and we know what doesn't. From the moment I ripped it out of its package I’m happy to say this razor is a real gamer.
It’s got five blades like the other guys, but check out THESE FEATURES we like;
Flip Trimmer:
You’re at work, or on a hot date, you just washed your hands and you glance at yourself in the mirror. Damn you just realize you’ve missed that patch of beard right under your nose! How did that happen? Well for starters, the cartridge that holds your 5 blades was poorly designed, so when you pushed it up against the bottom of your nose to shave, blade No. 1 wasn’t even close to your beard.
That’s EXACTLY where Schick’s flip trimmer comes into play. Flip it back to catch that tight spot then flip it forward, it clicks into place, and finish the rest of your shave. Gimmick? The Flip is not. It’s easy to use, highly practical, provided feedback (the click) and gave me consistent close-up shave results.
Gel Reservoir:
Seven days into my testing I begin my shave with the usual warm water splash followed by a sudsy cleanse. Then for kicks, I purposely began my shave WITHOUT any cream, gel or other lubricant just to see how the Schick reservoir stacks up. Although I wouldn’t recommend you try this at home, the reservoir laid down enough lube to provide me with a comfortable shave! Conclusion: the reservoir amazingly meters out enough lubricant to ensure my shave was comfortable and close day after day.
Creature Features:
Balance. Feel. And Style. We take them for granted, but are extremely P.O.’d when they’re missing. Make no mistake, the Hydro 5 looks good, feels good, and plays well in your hands while you’re shaving. Its balanced weight and natural grip point ensure the blade stays in contact with your face at the proper angle throughout your entire shave.
Intangibles:
After two solid weeks of shaving with the Hydro 5 razor I noticed a “click” at the end of each stroke. Shave. Click. Shave. Click. I love it! This razor provides subtle feedback to me while I’m shaving. Didn’t ask for that. Schick delivered.
